In a scathing attack on the jobless Conservative MP David Davis has the used theTimes newspaper to call for those on benefits to be dragooned into work squads and used to dig trenches so BT can build the UK's next generation broadband network.
This controversial MP who was raised on a council estate may be remembered for his Conservative Party Leadership bids in 2001 and 2005, as well as his resignation in 2008 as the Shadow Home Secretary in a campaign designed to provoke public debate around the erosion of Civil Liberties.
Undeterred by this background Davis remained adamant that “Building a superfast rural broadband network is largely low-skilled – digging trenches, laying pipes, filling them in” which could easily be done by the unemployed at "Only a small fraction of the cost in high-tech materials."
Unfortunately the MP`s words are hidden behind the paywall of the Times newspaper, which means only those that are willing to pay will be able to read it.
A BT spokesperson responding to the story said “Building a superfast broadband network is a complex business involving highly skilled staff and we are currently passing 80,000 premises a week."
These comments are a reminder of just how power corrupts, even for a lad from a council estate and the pedigree of the conservative party running deep through the veins of the lowest to take every opportunity they can get to vilify and put the unemployed in their place. Let’s not kid ourselves the press gangs are already lined with workfare, ready to train us in how to dig a Hole.
