TOPIC: Police seek powers to shut websites

Police seek powers to shut websites 29 Nov 2010 00:12 #22

Just how far will the police go to STOP? The Alternative Press or websites like this that try to organise or inform the population, however may get labelled as criminal for political reasons. It seems the question is being answered as SOCA table a plan to Nominet. If anyone has information on this plan please post it here or send it to us through our contact form.

Police seek powers to shut websites

The police are seeking powers to shut down websites deemed to be engaged in "criminal" activity.

The Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) has tabled a plan for Nominet, which oversees .uk web addresses, to be given the domain closing power.

Nominet said the idea was only a proposal and invited people to join the debate on the form of the final policy.

Seems the Americans are planning the same thing at the same time. In fact according to the article below they've already started doing it, even before any legislation enables them to do it! And web domains have been seized and closed, that have no demonstrable "criminal" content.

Who Needs COICA When Homeland Security Gets To Seize Domain Names?
from the this-won't-end-well dept

The latest set of seizures is no less troubling. These domain seizures come even without the COICA law being in place, and despite assurances from COICA supporters that no such domain seizures would ever possibly come without a full trial first, many of the operators of the domain names seized in this round state they hadn't received any notification of complaints, let alone demands to be taken down.
