Anyone about to start their indefinate sentence on the Work Program would do well to prepare themselves in advance. The all round assault on their independence, dignity and self respect that the poverty pimp providers use to take control of your life will start on the very first appointment. If not prepared you might find they have achieved many of their aims before you even realise what they are up to.

Because of the constant threat of them raising sanction doubts if you don't conform to their every command you will need to be very careful how you defend yourself. There are certain steps you can take to retain some degree of self determination and respect though. They won't like it but if you state your case firmly but reasonably they will just have to lump it. In fact the more control over your own life you can retain, the less they are likely or able to abuse you. As you will be on the Work Program until you find employment, retire, die, or the WP collapses this is very important.

You will have been unemployed for 12 months (3 months if kicked of ESA or other disability benefit by ATOS) when mandated onto the WP so you are likely to already be familiar with DWP/JCP dishonesty and trickery. Your pimp however has the added motive of financial gain and virtual immunity from complaint though so they are likely to be even more slippery.

1. Record every word of any meetings with your provider.

People have already had sanction doubts raised claiming they failed to attend an appointment. A recording would obviously protect you from this as well as the many other lies you will almost inevitably experience from them.

This can be done on via mobile phone, MP3 player, USB type recorder or an old fashioned dictaphone. Personally I would recommend not telling them. If you aren’t happy with this you can tell them but they won't like it and they certainly don't deserve such consideration. It's debatable if they can legally stop you but remember, we are second class citizens and many of the normal rights of a free individuals will be denied us. For example, ATOS are performing body searches of disabled people arriving for assessments due to too many of their lies being exposed.

2. Do not sign the consent for release of personal data forms.

This is very important and very effective. These forms give them permission to use your personal data that they have already illegally obtained from the DWP as they wish. They will not like this at all but the forms should clearly, by law, state that you don't have to consent if you don't want too. Despite the optional nature of this consent they did initially try to reject people off the program after a refusal. I think most pimps have now had their cards well and truly marked on this point though so don't be bullied into it.

The main reasons they want this consent is to be able to spam your details out to employees on the lookout for cheap, compliant labour and also to obtain their pay off from the DWP should they manage to pimp you out. They also need this consent to keep in touch with any employer (for 2 years if you last that long) and claim more cash for every month you remain employed. Apart from these monthly payments they also want to maintain contact with the employer and will intervene on your behalf (yea right!) if your employer suggests you are not likely to keep the job.

If they keep pestering for it, tell them that you are capable of applying for your own jobs and if they have any vacancies they should give you the details so you can make your own application.

3. Do not allow them to keep either a paper or digital copy of your CV.

Again, they will spam these out to any of their corporate accomplices looking for cheap labour. You should be able to reasonably justify this on the same grounds as for the data release forms. You are perfectly capable of applying for your own jobs and an application coming via a WP pimp is likely to be less successful than one from a free independent individual.

4. Do not give them you home or mobile telephone number.

They will harass you any time they feel like it if you do. If you have previously given a phone number to the DWP they will have been already been provided with it in the data protection breach already committed by the DWP. If it's a mobile, I would change the sim card (often available free) and tell them you no longer have one. If a land line I am not sure (I can't afford one myself!). I would also tell them that your preferred method of communication is via the post. This is unlikely to stop them calling you though. If you have caller id they usually call with their number withheld. I have made it clear that I never answer calls from withheld numbers as they are invariably scammers or conmen. Especially true in this case. Furthermore, the fact that they themselves are coy about revealing their phone number means they can hardly criticise you for doing the same. (Except of course, we no longer have the same rights as “normal” people!)

5. Do not let them know if you have internet access at home.

Again this would just allow them free access into your private life whenever they like. Tell them you have occasional access at a friends or the library. It's difficult to claim that you haven't got an email address these days but if you haven't got regular internet access you are free to respond or not as you see fit. Remind them that your preferred communication is via the post though.

6. Don't let them up your existing Job Seekers Agreement.

They will try to get you to apply for an increasing number of vacancies per week. Don't let them. Your Job Seekers Agreement is a negotiated agreed contract with the DWP. Fulfillment of which entitles you to benefits. I heard recently of a farcical situation were someone was being asked to make 40 applications a week! You may need to remind them that you have this contractual agreement with a proper professionals and will only negotiate it further with them.

There are other tactics which will help you to maintain some semblance of self respect and independence but I think the 6 above will lay out your ground rules and show them you are no ones pushover. They are likely to mark you down as “difficult” and park you. This means they will give the you the absolute minimum attention and input they can and leave you free to get on with the difficult task of finding a decent job.

One more thing. Don't believe for one second that they are your friend. It is fatal. They make great efforts at this but most of them will give themselves away regularly by allowing their mask to slip and their prejudice and contempt to show.

They are not your pal. Remember you are just their meal ticket.

Good tips! I am on the WP sadly and have fallen foul of most of these. My naivety. However, as someone looking to set up his own busines in the design, print and internet field, I do have range of graphics software including Adobe CS. This includes Adobe Acrobat Pro.

As a result, using Acrobat's security features, I have restricted the abilty to print or even copy text within my CV. Some may see this as arkwardness or sheer bloody mindedness.

However, many unsuspecting clients have had their CV's altered without their prior knowledge and sent to businesses without their consent! Often these 'tweaked' CV's are worse than the originals as they are often peppered with spelling mistakes and poor punctuation. If you feel you have to hand in your CV, do NOT save it as an editable Word / RTF file.

All good advice! I would give myself four and a half out of six. Background - have been sold by DWP to pimp A4greed and so I am now their property, I have thus far attended 2 appointments.
My self assessment:

1. Record every word of any meetings with your provider.
Been doing this at both pimp office and JC+ signings. I use a cheap MP3 player. I am not very good at hiding it so I am sure that the Interviewer/adviser is aware of its presence. So far no one has commented. The quality is not great but I think the point is that they know that the proceedings are being recorded which makes them more cautious. I think the official position is that you are allowed to record either covertly or overtly. If they know you are recording (because you have told them) they should be (even more) concerned about other people's confidentiality - it is their responsibility to take precautions (private room) to ensure that third party conversations are not inadvertently recorded. Even though it is legal for you to record there are limitations on publishing material (e.g. on the web) - we are entering into copywright law here. It's fine to record for your own purposes though.

2. Do not sign the consent for release of personal data forms.
I refused at first meeting and (so far) haven't been asked again. Good way to cause a bit of consternation. Encourage others to do the same and remember that it's possible to withdraw consent previously given.

3. Do not allow them to keep either a paper or digital copy of your CV.
So far only shown a paper copy on the grounds that it didn't leave my sight and was returned to me (If you do this remember to delete phone numbers and e-mail details or they will just take a note without telling you).

4. Do not give them you home or mobile telephone number. I would add e-mail address to the list. They don't like this much either! The response I got was "what happens if we need to contact you about an urgent/immediate job opportunity?", my reply - write to me with details or wait till my next appointment, Long term, sustainable jobs (which is what they are supposed to be helping us get)don't get filled and disappear overnight.

5. Do not let them know if you have internet access at home.
I slipped up here as it was my reason for not attending interminable, mandatory jobsearch sessions. My line -"there is nothing I can do here that I can't do at home" was responded to with a load of guff about "support" and "lack of distractions" but I stuck to my guns.

6. Don't let them up your existing Job Seekers Agreement.
So far they haven't ried - I'm sure they will!

I would add -7. Don't be afraid to complain. I know the dice are stacked against you but why be compliant? Copy the JC+ in on all complaints - they say that they want feedback on the Pimps' service - so give them some!

I have just been sentenced to WP and already have come up against A4E incompetence. At my JCPlus referral I made it clear I did not consent to data sharing with any 3rd party, this was ignored and my complaint against JCPlus has just been hand delivered. I had already removed by mobile number from DWP records so A4E have to contact me by letter. This they duly did, and lo and behold when I called for the 'sentencing appointment' they took 20 minutes to locate my details as I would not confirm anything on the phone. I am ex JCPlus (I was a nice one!!) and since leaving have an extensive legal background and have every intention of making these Providers lives a misery! The majority of unemployed are not feckless layabouts, we are here because the economy has collapsed and I object to my statutory rights being stamped on. I have template letters available if anyone needs them for Data Protection, Subject Access Requests etc. I also have a template letter that informs the DWP that when I sign off (HOPE!! lol) I will be objecting to any payments being made to the Provider, and will also use my right to merely sign off with 'circumstances changed' Any Provider attempting to invade my privacy when I out of the system will get short shrift. As for sanctions - they cannot sanction anyone for standing up for their rights under law. I apologise if this is under the incorrect heading! I will update after I have interviewed my adviser at A4E lol, hopfeully they will park me lol.

Hi Jabberwocky
you say At my JCPlus referral I made it clear I did not consent to data sharing with any 3rd party
Unfortunately the DWP will share your data with providers and they with sub prime providers and so on down the chain. The reasoning being the relationship betweeen these parties (data owners/users etc.) which has been well documented elsewhere.
I wonder about your avatar - is it significant? I think we may be property of the same a4greed branch!

Hi Gissajob. I had studied the boards before my WP sentencing and used the 'informed consent' angle to dispute the sharing of 'sensitive personal data' eg disability markers etc. I've also asked the local dole office to give me a detailed account of exactly what they have shared. It probably won't help me, BUT, I refuse to be treated like a 2nd class citizen, they also forget that many of us did work, we aren't here because its a lifestyle choice. One thing that they have got wrong though is that the adviser stated the consent was on my JSAG, it isn't. I've been on a WP type thing before - with Ingeus, jumped up salesmen, the lot of them and I am not letting them get paid for being pimps who think they can sanction me so I submit to their authority. I am in Notts so the avatar is apt lol, power to the people.

Well Jabberwocky - Our paths must cross!
I too am in Notts and, as I mentioned, the property of the excrable a4greed. Also did the FND with the "sales people" from Ignoras (now across the road from a4greed).
The worst of the a4greed people remind me of fanatical, religious types - absolutely convinced they are right and unwilling to even consider that others may have a valid opinion. They are also completely useless at keeping Enemma's fruitbowl stocked. (the one where according to "Welcome Aboard" one can "help yourself to a drink and some fresh fruit". I've never seen as much as a mouldy grape in it. I consider it to be somewhat symbolic of the whole WP - promises a lot and delivers nothing.
